I have a passion for classic VWs, from the beetles right the way up to the old camper vans. I currently have my seventh beetle sat in the garden, its not in the best state at the minute, but its my project. I plan to overhaul the whole car, putting a subaru enginge into it. I aim to take this 1970's bug and bring it upto the spec of the modern day car, whilst still keeping the inique styling that I love. Whilst I get that up and running I drive a VW Lupo.
I also like to Diabolo, it’s a juggling prop that consists of the Diabolo and two sticks tied together at one end, held by the other with one stick in each hand. I like this as I can do a variety of different tricks including throwing it up into the air and then catching it. I also have a pair of jumping stilts so I'm have great fun with them, I find it easier to walk on them than getting up on to them to start with. Along with these I also have a unicycle, which I’m trying to learn to ride.
I also love my music and listen to most things, my Ipod goes with me nearly everywhere I go, 1 because I hate the radio, theres too many adverts and too much talk, and 2 because life without music is just plain boring.
I've been interested in web design since 2003, when I was supposed to do a web unit whilst I was school. Unfortunately as my tutor went off sick it never happened.
Although I never did get to make a website as part of my studies, it had sowed the seed. I don’t know what it was but there was just something that appealed to me about being able to create my own websites. From that point onwards I have taken it upon myself to find out about how to design, build and publish websites.
I started out as many web designers, looking at websites source code, picking out the common elements and just playing around with the code to see what happens. Then I bought myself a book and really started to progress.
By the end of 2003 I had my own personal interest website, about VW’s. I had the website hosted with one of the free web hosts and I was happy with the site. I had a links page on the site so I started contacting other similarly themed websites asking if I could link to their website, and them to link back to mine in return. I did this to increase the traffic to my website and it did increase a little.
I love the fact that the industry is always changing because of the technology being developed. When I first started making website I would never have thought we’d be able to surf the internet or e-mail from our mobile phones.
I’d never really thought about the internet’s potential, as far as I was concerned the internet was a place to find out information and play games on, and to do that you needed a computer and a wire plugged into that to allow you to connect to the internet.
It’s not only the fact the technology is always evolving and so quickly that I find exciting, it’s the variety too. I like the fact that you can achieve a certain effect or look by using totally different processes, or that you can be working on a simple template based website one week a and fully bespoke made website with database integration the next.
I feel that web design also beneficial to the lifelong learning concept because as you liaise with clients and develop websites for them, you can learn new things. For example you might learn about a process used to create something that you might use every day. It gives you the opportunity to broaden your horizons and learn about things that ordinarily you wouldn’t know about.
Since completing my GCSEs I have done one year’s study at a sixth form college then three further years at Hertford Regional College, Ware. In my first year at HRC I studied the BTEC First Diploma For IT Practitioners - General, and then the BTEC National Diploma For IT Practitioners - Software Development for the following two years.
I feel that some of the units that I studied during this time have helped with my understanding of coding practices as well as increasing my confidence when working with other people. At college some of the units we studied were web based.
In my first year one of the units was on the basics of web design and covered how to create a simple website using HTML code.
In my second year we were given an assignment where we had to create a website for a music artiste. This included market research, liaising with a mock client to find out their requirements and then planning and producing their website.
In my third year we touched upon CSS but the unit was Server-side Scripting and was based on ASP code.
Since leaving college In June 2008 I have been looking for a position in web design, a task I knew would be hard enough due to the competitive nature of the industry, without the additional effects of the recession.
I have been teaching myself PHP/SQL with the intentions of boosting my abilities and improving the functionality of my websites for better optimisation. The best demonstration of this is my Little Shopper website.
