Full Name: Benjaman Graham Woolner
Year of Birth: 1988
Home Town: Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
I am an enthusiastic individual. I am looking for a position in web design. This is something I'm not only passionate about but enjoy. My aim is to find a job where I can utilise my current skills and learn new ones. I would like the chance to work in an ever changing industry where the ability of keeping skills up to date is key. I am reliable, punctual, trustworthy and able to work on my own or as part of a team.
I have now had the pleasue of working along side two different companies to gain work experience. The first company that I worked with was AFM web design, a Stevenage based web company. I approached them looking for either a job or unpaid work experience. I sent in my CV along with a link to this website asking for at the very least some feedback on my portfolio.
As it turned out they had a full staff, but they liked my approach and took the time to look at my website. They decided to set me some little challenges and then gave me the break I've been looking for, unpaid work experience, an opportunity to see the commercial side of web design, dealing with real clients and their changing wants and needs.
My first commercially developed website is now live www.aprilkelley.org.uk. I feel I have taken a lot from this opportunity, I have now dealt with a client for the first time, I have learnt about the design process and some more about using CSS based layouts which will be beneficial to me for future websites. I have also learnt a little about web accessibility, an area I want to explore more, and the importance of SEO. Not only this I've made some new friends along the way.
The second company that I have worked with is Horizon Hobby and I gained this work experiance by doing a good job for them whilst working as a temporary warehouseman. At the end of my time in the warehouse I asked if they had a web department, and wether I could get some work experiance with them. They said yes to this and whilst working with them I carried out two tasks, one was to create/edit the images for their quartly publication, of which I have a copy. The second task was to create a Servo Comparison Chart which can now been seen live here.
I have been teaching myself elements of programming since my tutor at school went off sick and I feel this shows both initiative and enthusiasm.
I have experience working with both Windows and Mac based computer systems. I have a good knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite. I have also used Macromedia/Adobe suite, and I have fair knowledge of
Whilst at college I have studied Visual Basic and C# on the programming side of my course. I have also done two web based units one of which covered some ASP scripting. Another unit I feel benefits me is Advanced Databases which touched on queries and database normalisation to third normal form. I have also taught myself HTML and have built web pages that use Cascading Style Sheets. Having finished with my studies I now plan to teach myself PHP, Java, JavaScript and SQL from books already purchased.

| Horizon Hobby - Temporary Warehouseman | Started: 6th June 2011 | Finished: 28th August 2011 | |
This job saw me fulfilling a number of different roles. Much of my time was spent moving stock around and performing Quality Control checks on a range of different products. At other times I was helping to pack and wrap pallets or unload container trucks. I also spent time picking stock for orders, and working on production orders where two or three different items are combined together in order to make a different product. |

| Horizon Hobby - Trainee Web Designer | Started: 12th September 2011 | Finished: 14th October 2010 |
I recently had the opportunity to work with Horizon Hobby on unpaid work experience, having worked for them as a Temporary Warehouseman. Over the five weeks I was with working with them I was given two tasks. One was to help edit all the images needed for the quarterly publication. This involved using Photoshop to create paths of the products and separate the product from its background. This was the first time I had used the Pen Tool and Paths when it comes to image manipulation in this form. My second task was to create a Servo Comparison Chart. For this I was presented with a spreadsheet of Servos and a brief, Create a servo comparison chart. This was a task made more awkward by the restrictions of the server, I could not use PHP or any form of database software like SQL as these posed a threat to the security of both the website and the server. Initially I was pointed in the direction of ASP, XML and JavaScript but after a little bit of time thinking about how I wanted to make this project work, I came to the conclusion that I would use JavaScript alone, taking advantage of the fact its Object Orientated. I now effectively have a JavaScript flat file database, using an array of servo objects to store the data in. This data is then used by my dropdown menu filtration system and pulls every servo that matches the search criteria ready for display. You can see a working example of this project when you look through my portfolio. |
| AFM Website Design - Trainee Web Designer | Started: 14th September 2009 | Finished: 31st January 2010 | |
I have had the opportunity to work with AFM Website Design on unpaid work experience. They have given me the opportunity to design and produce a website for a client under their supervision. By working with AFM I have greater insight into what is required from a website, not just from the clients themselves but legally. Whilst working with AFM I have had to talk with the client, a talented young actress called April Kelley. April contacted AFM wanting a cheap website produced that would help her finance her college tuition. Having had this meeting with April I then had to come up with a selection of potential website designs that would suit her needs and requirements. I have then taken Aprils chosen design and produced a working coded version using a combination of HTML and CSS. Aprils website has also been optimised for search engines and has been made accessible so that anyone with a disability or poor vision is able to adjust the website to better suit their needs. These are both areas of web design I had not known that much about before I was given this opportunity. The website I created with AFM is now live www.aprilkelley.org.uk and in the source code I am credited for the website design. Currently if you look at the AFM client portfolio on their website they have a link to April's website and a small description next to it which reads "We had a very keen young man called Ben Woolner contact us after a job as a trainee web designer. We have a full staff but wanted to do a project with him. April Kelley is a talented young actress who wanted a website to help her finance her college tuition but had limited funds. Ben designed and coded this website and April helped by providing ideas and graphics. We supervised the project and the result is a very eye catching website. It also has a content management system to enable April to edit her pages and keep her costs to a minimum." |

| First Signs & Labels - Assistant Sign Technician | Started: 13th October 2003 | Finished: 17th October 2003 | |
Unit 1 Raynham Close, Raynham Road Industrial Estate, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, CM23 5PL This position was a great opportunity to work as a part of a team. The experience was also beneficial as it gave me an insight into how an organisation works and just how crucial meeting a deadline is. I also learned how important it is to work closely with you client. I say this because at the last minute as we were finalising a design with the client, ready for printing, the client asked us to change the design slightly. As an Assistant Sign Technician I helped to design, prepare and apply vinyl sign writing for a company’s van. I also helped with the engraving of plastic signs and with the screen printing process. |
